New Music Centre creates opportunities for children time of education cuts

A new music centre at Wynstream primary school is creating opportunities for children from schools in the area.

Despite cuts to music education, the Centre has been set up so that children who might not otherwise be able to participate have the chance to sing in a choir, learn a brass instrument or guitar.

All children of primary school age in the area are invited to join in the activities which take place on Mondays after school.

The venture has taken off with support from the school, funding from Devon & Torbay Music Education Hubs, and with input from Exeter School through its partnership work with local state schools.

Wynstream Primary School headteacher Elise Redman said:

‘It is well publicised that funding in education is very stretched at the moment and this impacts on the range of activities that can be provide in schools. We also are mindful that many parents are struggling so paying for music lessons often isn’t an option.

I believe that opportunities to play music are so important for children’s all round education and wellbeing, and that’s why we’ve pulled out all the stops to make this Music Centre happen.”

Music Centre leader Chris Spreadbury said:

“We want to make sure that all children have the opportunity to be musicians now and in the future. They might become the leader of a professional orchestra, join their local brass band, play the piano for pleasure or sing in the village choir. Learning music at an early age equips you for the future and makes you a more rounded human being.”

The Music Centre runs on Monday evenings during term time, from 3.30 to 5pm at Wynstream Primary School, 74 Burnthouse Ln, Exeter EX2 6AY. To join activities, sign up now or find out more.
